1. Sign out of Messenger.

3. Create a folder where you will save the images:
a. In Windows Explorer, click the folder in which you want to create the new folder.
b. On the "File" menu, click "New," and then click "Folder."
c. Type a name for the folder.
4. In Windows Explorer, click "Folder Options" on the "Tools" menu, and then click the "View" tab. In the "Advanced Settings" box, select the "Show hidden files and folders" check box.
5. Clear the "Hide extensions for known file types" check box, and then click "OK."
6. Use Windows Explorer to access the Messenger folder.

a. Locate the Application Data folder: Click "Start," click "Run," type "%appdata%", and then click "OK." The Application Data folder will open in Windows Explorer.
b. From the %appdata% folder, use the following path to locate the MSN Messenger folder:
%appdata%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
- Note: %appdata% represents the location of the Application Data folder.
7. Open the 1587157617 folder in the MSN Messenger folder.
- Note: "Passport Network credentials" represents a folder that is associated with a Passport Network account. The MSN Messenger folder includes a "Passport Network credentials" folder for each Passport Network account that is associated with your Messenger account. These folders are named with a unique numeric ID that is associated with each Passport Network account. They contain user-specific data, such as display pictures, custom emoticons, and background pictures. The display pictures are stored in the "User Tile" folder.
8. Open each .dat file in Microsoft Internet Explorer to view each picture.
9. Follow these steps for each picture that you want to copy:
a. Click to select the picture, right-click the picture, and then click "Copy."
b. In Windows Explorer, click the folder that you created to store the image.
c. Right-click the folder, and then click "Paste."
d. Click to select the picture, right-click the picture, and then click "Rename" to rename the picture.
- Note: Replace the .dat extension with .jpg when you rename the picture.
- To restore default content for your e-mail ID in MSN Messenger, follow the steps for the operating system that you are using.
- Note: Deleting this file or files will delete any custom emoticons, backgrounds, purchased content, or other custom settings that are related to the log on ID for the computer. If you purchased content, make sure that you have the PIN numbers for download before you follow these steps.

1. Sign out of MSN Messenger.
2. Click "Start," click "Run," type "%appdata%\microsoft\msn messenger\1587157617", and then click "OK."
3. Select the folder that you want to regenerate, and then delete it.
4. Sign in to MSN Messenger. The folder is re-created.
